Portland to Seattle

We are in now in Seattle having left Portland early this morning. Before I tell you about Seattle, I have to tell you about our last event in Portland. Last night we went to OMSI- the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. We went to the Omnimax Dome Theater to watch a film called Grand Canyon Adventure. The Omnimax is a 5 story domed screen, 6532 square feet of projection surface, and each frame is 10 times larger than the standard frame. The screen was so huge you actually get dizzy for a few moments until you get used to the size. It was a really amazing experience! If you want to read more about it, go to http://www.omsi.edu/ . It will tell you all about the events at the museum.
We are in Seattle but we are not sleepless, due to the fact that we must have walked 10 miles today. Our first excursion was to the Pikes Place Market. What an adventure! It is so huge you see rows and rows of vendors selling everything from lunch, dessert, breads, flowers, fish, vegetables, etc. to name a few. We did treat ourselves to pineapple bread and coconut cream bread. Yummy! We also saw the famous fish market but only got to see one or two fish thrown, due to the fact they only throw fish when they sell fish. As we were leaving we heard whistling and shouting and turned to see a troupe of about 30 naked bicyclists, all men, riding by the market.
Later, we went up the space needle. The space needle was built in 1962 for the Seattle World's Fair. It is 605 feet high, can withstand winds up to 200 m.p.h., has 25 lightning rods, and has an observation deck where you can view Puget Sound, Mt Rainier, and the Cascades and Olympic mountains. It is really a breathtaking view from the top. Elevators take you up to the deck where they have a restaurant. It takes 43 seconds to get to the top.
We also went to the Seattle Underground today. We didn't take the tour due to the long wait, but we did read about it. The underground was the original streets and storefronts of Seattle in the mid 1800's. Across from the underground we went in to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and got some delicious chocolate candy. The girl that waited on us was from Greensboro and goes to UNC-CH where she will be returning in the fall! She noticed Don's t shirt that said YMCA Northwest NC. She is in Seattle for the summer working and visiting her boyfriend. Small world, huh?
Tomorrow we board our cruise ship before noon. The cruise doesn't depart until 4:00 or so, but we plan to beat the crowd. We bought rain hats today and have our warm clothing packed so we are prepared!
Alaska here we come!
