Scotts Bluff and Fort Laramie

Yesterday we visited two very interesting landmarks. The first was Scott's Bluff, Nebraska and the other was Fort Laramie, Wy.

Scotts Bluff is named after Hiram Scott, a fur trader, who died on the bluff after being attacked by Indians while on a trip across the Oregon Trail. We hiked up to the bluff and actually walked on the Oregon Trail where thousands of pioneers crossed the country on their treck to Calif, Utah, and Oregon. It took them 5-6 months, and some of these pioneers died. We saw replicas of covered wagons and the actual ruts the wagons made on their long trip across the trail. Did you know the Oregon Trail was only in existence for 27 years?

Our next stop was Fort Laramie, Wyoming a post for US soldiers. Fort Laramie was established by the government in 1849 to help insure the safety of those crossing the Oregon Trail as tensions betweein the Indians and pioneers increased. The troops patrolled and maintained the Oregon Trail. We saw the barricks, captains quarters, company store, dining hall and parade field to name a few. There is also a museum and memorial there in rememberence of the soldiers.

We stayed in Rawlings, Wyoming last night and will continue our travel to Utah today. The countryside is beautiful and we have traveled through Big Sky country to mountains. We had a hugh rainstorm yesterday where the lightning loooked so close and big hail came out of the sky.

We will be in Utah tonight and will stay for two days. Then it will be on to Portland to see Kathleen, Marty, and little Mason.
